AVOID THE ISA STAMPEDE

The mad and frenetic rush for ISAs has now started to die down. It happens every year and it’s crazy.

No one likes to admit it but over the last 4 years the frenzied marketing hype has sucked investors into making some shocking decisions. Just have a look at this record of top ISA sales over the last 4 years.

1996/7 Europe

1997/8 Pacific

1998/9 Corporate bonds

1999/0 Technology.

Except for Europe the performance record for ISAs bought at the end of the ISA season has been disastrous. And even the European ISAs looked very sick in the first 12 months or so.

Ignore the marketing hype if possible because it brings the worst out in investors. It is often said that investment is driven by 2 factors - greed and fear. Buying at the wrong time – greed – and selling at the wrong time – fear.

Here are 2 investment maxims for long term investors:

  1. don’t make a hurried decision.

  2. if you buy at the end of the ISA season the market makers will have pushed up share prices because they saw you coming!

And if you like investment maxims how about one from the greatest investor of all time – Warren Buffet.

"Most investors, both institutional and individual, will find that the best way to own common stocks is through an index fund that charges minimal fees. Those following this path are sure to beat the net results (after fees and expenses) delivered by the great majority of investment professionals."

Warren Buffett, 28th February, 1997

A new tax year has started, share prices have corrected and netISA’s FTSE 100 tracker ISA beckons. Think about buying now and enjoy your tax freedom throughout the whole year – not just at the end. To invest, from the main menu click to <To Invest>.

And if you’re worried that markets might fall some more, netISA investors have the exclusive benefit of immunISA. It costs nothing to set up and gives you peace of mind. Once you are a netISA investor open your immunISA right away so it’s ready to use when you get twitchy about markets
