SOCIALLY
RESPONSIBLE INVESTING
AND
SHAREHOLDER VALUE
The Background
Socially responsible investing has become a key
issue for many investors. We enter the
21st century faced by a number of huge global
challenges. Economic development,
sustainability of natural resources, protection of the
environment and social justice are just some of the
major issues facing society.
Business is an integral and influential part of
society, and as such has a vital role to play in
shaping the future. Across the world,
forward-looking companies have increasingly embraced
corporate responsibilities striving to have a positive
impact on social justice and environmental
sustainability. This has also helped them
to manage their businesses better, capitalise
financially on the growing awareness of social
responsibility and mitigate business risk.
Socially responsible investment has also become an
important issue for the investment
community. Investors, as consumers, are
worried about the world they live in – congestion,
climate changes, food scares, to name but a few of the
current issues.
As a result, a growing number of institutions and
individuals want their investments to make a positive
contribution to
the world rather than be linked to the exploitation of
people and the environment.
They
recognise that companies that address these challenges
are likely to be well managed,
reap future rewards and avoid risk, making them a
desirable part of any well managed investment
portfolio.
